As climate change issues become more serious, there is a worldwide need to drastically reduce CO2, a greenhouse gas. We have entered into a partnership for a practical application of the technology for manufacturing various carbon materials and products (Carbon Capture and Utilization technology, "CCU") and technology for capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO2) as solid carbon (Carbon Capture and Storage technology, "CCS") using carbon monoxide (CO) produced by technology that efficiently convert CO2 into CO ("chemical looping reaction technology"). The realization of this scheme provides a new method of CCS, reduce dependence on fossil resources and contribute to the de-carbonization in producing various carbon products.

SEKISUI CHEMICAL has succeeded in developing production technology for transforming waste into ethanol, and Sumitomo Chemical possesses technological know-how in manufacturing polyolefin. The two companies have agreed to form a strategic alliance to benefit society by deploying technology for manufacturing polyolefin using waste as a raw material.
Pilot production for each will begin in fiscal 2022, and full-scale market launch is expected in fiscal 2025.
This alliance between the two companies will make it possible to introduce this waste-derived ethanol into the production cycle of organic chemical materials, such as daily-use plastics, and will enable the creation of a circular economy that uses waste as a raw material to manufacture polyolefin. SEKISUI CHEMICAL hopes to contribute toward the creation of a sustainable society by reducing the use of new fossil fuels, and at the same time, reducing both CO2 emissions from incinerating waste as well as plastic waste.

Against a backdrop of increasing consumer demand for top-quality automobiles in China, advanced-function foams have seen a similar boost in demand in the Chinese market. The new production line is expected to deliver increased production in the near future, while the factory layout was designed so as to allow for the introduction of multiple additional production lines as necessary. The factory has also been constructed to emit zero industrial wastewater, in keeping with China's strict environmental regulations.

In order to achieve a 6% reduction in GHG emissions from 2013 amounts (942,000 tonnes of CO2 emitted in FY 2013) as laid out in our Environment Medium-term Plan, SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group has allocated 12 billion yen for environment-contributing investments and is now promoting the introduction of and renewal to more effective equipment. SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group's long-term 2030 targets for reducing GHG emissions were the first in the chemical industry to be certified by the SBT initiative. In addition to environment-contributing investments for improving equipment and facilities in the future, we are committed to achieving our reduction targets through new innovations in our product design and manufacturing as well as in the energy mix that powers our operations.

SEKISUI CHEMICAL recognizes its responsibility as a Japanese corporation to help Japan reach its CO2 emissions reduction targets as set forth in the Paris Accord. In turn, we have set our own ambitious targets that either match or surpass those established by the country as a whole. Among our many efforts, our housing business in particular was recognized and awarded an Annual Global Environment Award for developing and promoting energy self-sufficient homes.

Selected to the CDP Climate Change A-List

On January 22, 2019, SEKISUI CHEMICAL was selected to the 2018 CDP Climate Change A-List, which is managed by the Carbon Disclosure Project, an international NPO. CDP is a not-for-profit international charity that promotes the protection of our planet's forests and water resources as well as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions for cities and corporations. It represents 115 organizations and corporations as well as 650 global investment firms and implements and evaluates questionnaire-based surveys on the efficacy of solutions to address climate change, deforestation, and water security.
SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group is working to construct a sustainable business base in accordance with ESG standards and is making ambitious efforts to combat environmental issues, beginning with climate change, as part of its initiatives to tackle the environmental challenges represented among the three ESG factors. In June 2018, we were the world's first company in the chemical industry to acquire SBT Initiative Certification, following increased efforts to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions throughout our supply chain and beyond. We have also declared our support for the TCFD, which implements recommendations to encourage the evaluation and disclosure of information related to the impact of climate change on corporate finances. In the years ahead, we intend to further accelerate our comprehensive efforts to address the pressing challenges of climate change.
