Environment-Contributing Facility at YAMANASHI SEKISUI CO., LTD. Commences Operation

SEKISUI CHEMICAL CO., LTD. (President and Representative Director: Teiji Koge; hereinafter “SEKISUI CHEMICAL”) announces that its consolidated subsidiary YAMANASHI SEKISUI CO., LTD. (head office and plant: Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture; hereinafter “YAMANASHI SEKISUI”)—which manufactures and sells injection, extrusion and blow molded products—has become the first SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group location in Japan to introduce a large-scale solar power generation equipment for in-house use. At the same time, its hydraulic injection molding machine has been renewed to use electric machines and servomotors.

Background

The SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group has set a target of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions of at least 6% compared to fiscal year 2013 (actual CO2 emissions in fiscal 2013 was 942,000 tons) in our Environmental Medium-Term Plan “Sekisui Environmental Sustainability Plan: Accelerate” (Fiscal 2017-2019).*1 To achieve this target, SEKISUI CHEMICAL has set up an energy saving investment incentive program providing 12 billion yen to promote the introduction and renewal of equipment effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The introduction of solar power generation equipment and renewal of the hydraulic injection molding machine at YAMANASHI SEKISUI this time made use of this incentive program. As a whole, the Group expects to reduce annual emissions of CO2 by 30,000 tons. For setting long-term greenhouse gas reduction targets by fiscal 2030, the SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group became the first in the chemical sector to attain SBT Initiative certification*2 in June last year.

Initiatives of YAMANASHI SEKISUI

(1) Introduction of large-scale solar power generation equipment for in-house use

YAMANASHI SEKISUI introduced a large-scale solar power generation equipment for in-house use in April 2019 as a measure for reducing environmental impact. This solar power generation equipment is expected to generate at least 700MWh per year, and YAMANASHI SEKISUI will use the generated electricity for in-house use at its head office and plant. The generated electricity amounts to approximately 6% of YAMANASHI SEKISUI’s annual electricity consumption. In addition, this initiative is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emission by approximately 350 tons of CO2 each year.

While SEKISUI S-LEC AMERICA , LLC. (head office and plant: Winchester, Kentucky, United States), a consolidated subsidiary in the United States, was the first within the SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group to introduce solar power generation equipment for the purpose of in-house use last year, this is the first time within Japan that this initiative is being introduced.

    (2) Renewal of hydraulic injection molding machine

At YAMANASHI SEKISUI, the renewal of the hydraulic injection molding machine to use electric machines and servomotors started from fiscal 2017, and was completed in May 2019. At the same time, with the introduction of an energy management system, the energy consumption of molding machines and other utility equipment (such as ventilation fans) can be checked in real time. Through early discovery and control of unnecessary electricity consumption, it became possible to reduce annual electricity consumption by approximately 27%. In addition, this initiative is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emission by approximately 2,400 tons of CO2 each year.
