Japan’s First Mounting of Perovskite Solar Cells on Exterior Walls of Building
- Renovation of Osaka Head Office -

SEKISUI CHEMICAL CO., LTD. (President: Keita Kato; hereinafter “SEKISUI CHEMICAL”) has mounted film-type perovskite solar cells on the Dojima Kanden Building, where its Osaka Head Office is located, for the first time in Japan (as a “permanent installation” of film-type perovskite solar cells on the exterior walls of a building in Japan; as of October 4, 2023, based on in-house research).

1.Background on initiative

As the expansion of renewable energy is required to realize carbon neutrality by 2050, the film-type perovskite solar cells being developed by SEKISUI CHEMICAL are lightweight and flexible, enabling installation on the exterior walls of buildings and other places where it is difficult to install silicon solar cells .
Currently, there are no examples of film-type perovskite solar cells mounted on the exterior walls of existing buildings in Japan. However, SEKISUI CHEMICAL engaged in a joint study with Sekisui Jushi Corporation (President: Hiroshi Baba) on an “installation method that can withstand wind loads on the 12th floor for 20 years and maintain stable power generation performance,” completed “building material panels with film-type perovskite solar cells,” and installed the panels on the building.
The Dojima Kanden Building, which houses both companies, is currently undergoing a large-scale renovation that is scheduled for completion in April 2025. Perovskite solar cells will be installed on the walls of the building in conjunction with this construction work to reduce the environmental impact of the building. They will also be used for long-term quality assessment, including monitoring the amount of power generated by the cells and changes over time.

2. Future development

In addition to measuring the power generation effect and verifying the predicted and measured values in this installation method, SEKISUI CHEMICAL will further consider installation and construction methods for the exterior walls of existing buildings.
Technological verifications in a variety of applications have been fully underway since this fiscal year. In parallel with this, SEKISUI CHEMICAL has leveraged the Green Innovation Fund of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to establish a manufacturing process for 1m-width rolls and accelerate development to further improve durability and power generation efficiency, aiming for commercialization in 2025.
