Commencement of Joint Research on Film-type Perovskite Solar Cells with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government

SEKISUI CHEMICAL CO., LTD. (President: Keita Kato; hereinafter “SEKISUI CHEMICAL”) announces that it has decided to commence joint research on film-type perovskite solar cells with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Film-type perovskite solar cells will be installed at the Morigasaki Water Reclamation Center by spring 2023, the power generation amount will be monitored, and durability against corrosion will be checked.

1. Background of joint research

As climate change is becoming a global issue and renewable energy expansion is required to create a sustainable society, installation site limitations for silicon solar cells due to weight and other factors have become an issue. Film-type perovskite solar cells are a next-generation type of solar cell that are lightweight and flexible, enabling installation at various sites, such as building walls, roofs with limited load bearing, or curved surfaces. They are expected to accelerate the spread and expansion of renewable energy, greatly contributing to achieving carbon neutrality.

2. Joint development details

1) Implementation location

Morigasaki Water Reclamation Center (East series), Bureau of Sewerage, Tokyo Metropolitan Government
  Location: 2-5-1 Showajima, Ota-ku, Tokyo

2) Purpose

For the installation of film-type perovskite solar cells, SEKISUI CHEMICAL believes that public facilities with large-scale buildings, such as sewage facilities, are an important potential market, which will contribute to the realization of a decarbonized society, and thus will examine the viability of installing them at sewage facilities.

3) Main implementation details

Film-type perovskite solar cells will be installed on a portion of treatment tank covers by spring 2023, power generation efficiency will be measured, and corrosion resistance performance and other aspects will be verified.

3. Division of roles

Tokyo Metropolitan Government:

Overall coordination; perovskite solar cell installation site provision; technical advice and evaluation

SEKISUI CHEMICAL:

Research plan formulation; perovskite solar cell installation, measurement and analysis; research and development for application at sewage facilities

4. Future development of film-type perovskite solar cells

SEKISUI CHEMICAL achieved outdoor durability of 10 years equivalent ahead of the rest of the industry through original “sealing, film formation, materials and process technology,” creating a 30 cm-wide roll-to-roll manufacturing process. This manufacturing process has been successfully used to produce film-type perovskite solar cells with power generation efficiency of 15.0%.
Starting from FY2023, SEKISUI CHEMICAL will proceed with technological verification as well as installation and construction method establishment through installation in a variety of applications, including this one. It will also leverage the Green Innovation Fund of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to establish a manufacturing process for 1 m-wide rolls and promote development to further improve durability and power generation efficiency, aiming for commercialization in 2025.
