SEKISUI CHEMICAL makes CDP’s “Climate Change A-List” for 2 consecutive years

Tokyo, January 21st, 2020: SEKISUI CHEMICAL CO., LTD. (TSE: 4204) is proud to announce that it has been awarded a place on the Climate Change A List by international environmental impact non-profit CDP. We achieve a place on the A list for 2 consecutive years.

CDP is an international non-profit organization that drives companies and governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, safeguard water resources, and protect forests. As of 2019, companies were requested to disclose their environmental data by over 525 investors and about 125 organizations. CDP collects and assesses this data and scores companies from A to D- based on how they are tackling climate change, deforestation and water security. For 2019, 38 Japanese companies, including SEKISUI CHEMICAL, were selected as Climate Change A-List companies.

CDP

The CDP Climate Change A listing is recognition of SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group’s achievements in environmental practices. We seek to “contribute to improving the lives of the people of the world and the Earth’s environment” as stated in our Group Vision, and aim to establish a sustainable business base from the ESG perspective. Specifically, for E (environment), we set a long-term goal of reducing our own greenhouse gas emissions and those of our supply chain and are actively advancing efforts to address multiple environmental issues including climate change.
In June 2018, our long-term goal made us the first in the world from the chemical sector to receive certification from the SBT (Science Based Targets)*1 Initiative. In order to accomplish our long-term goal we view the expense of reducing emissions as an investment rather than a cost. As such, SEKISUI CHEMICAL has set aside over 0.3% of net sales (12 billion yen over the three-year period from FY 2017 to FY 2019) for an energy saving investment incentives program. The goal of this program is to invest in equipment renewal which will contribute to reduced emissions.
In January 2019, SEKISUI CHEMICAL expressed support for the recommendations of the TCFD. Then in July we made its first information disclosure in line with those recommendations, in which we indicate the significance of our contribution to climate change mitigation and adaptation through our business operations by grasping the impacts to/from climate change issues, recognizing the risks of those impacts, and translating those risks into opportunities. We believe that expanding our contributions will lead to increasing the sustainability of not only society but also our company.
Going forward, the SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group will continue to accelerate initiatives across the board to resolve climate change issues so as to achieve our vision of contributing to improving the lives of the people of the world and the Earth’s environment.

*1 SBT (Science Based Targets): Taking the opportunity of the adoption of the Paris Agreement, other joint initiatives were proposed in addition to the United Nations Global Compact. With SBT initiatives, company-set GHG reduction targets are certified as scientific based targets which contribute to long-term climate change measures.
