SEKISUI CHEMICAL CO., LTD. (President: Keita Kato; hereinafter “SEKISUI CHEMICAL”) announces that it commenced a joint demonstration test to establish an installation method targeting warehouse and factory walls with large solar power generation potential together with SENKO Group Holdings Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “SENKO Group”) and SENKO Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “SENKO”) at the SENKO Ibaraki Branch Ibaraki PD Center*1 (Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture) on March 22, 2024.

1. Background of joint demonstration test

As the decarbonization of energy is required to realize a decarbonized society by 2050, film-type perovskite solar cells are seen as a promising option to expand the introduction of renewable energy. They are lightweight and flexible, enabling installation in a variety of locations at various sites (such as building walls and low load-bearing roofs or curved surfaces) where it is difficult to install conventional silicon-based solar cells.

SEKISUI CHEMICAL achieved outdoor durability of 10 years equivalent ahead of the rest of the industry by means of an original “sealing, film formation, materials and process technology,” and creating a 30 cm-wide roll-to-roll manufacturing process. Furthermore, this manufacturing process has been successfully used to produce film-type perovskite solar cells with power generation efficiency of 15.0%.
Currently, SEKISUI CHEMICAL is aiming for practical application with the establishment of a manufacturing process for 1 m-wide rolls and the further improvement of durability and power generation efficiency, and is accelerating development leveraging the Green Innovation Fund of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)

The SENKO Group is committed to sustainable management so that it can continue to develop and grow sustainably alongside society. It provides value through its business activities to help solve a variety of issues, including making various proposals mainly to logistics companies as well as working together with customers to realize a de-carbonized society.
SENKO is aiming to create a management model that logistics companies should implement for a sustainable society. It is actively promoting initiatives such as proposing efficient transportation methods and introducing solar power generation that does not generate greenhouse gases. SENKO has decided to participate in this joint demonstration test to establish the installation of film-type perovskite solar cells on warehouse walls based on the belief that this initiative will further help to solve the issue of decarbonization.

2. Details of joint demonstration test

In this demonstration test, the installation of 16 perovskite solar cells (16 m2) was completed in six hours, from installation preparation to cable management, using a new, simplified installation method. In addition to verifying the power generation capacity, the three companies will jointly verify weather resistance—wind resistance in particular—over the next year.
