Photovoltaic System for Generating Power for Internal Consumption Installed at a US Plant that Manufactures Interlayer Films for Laminated Glass

SEKISUI S-LEC AMERICA, LLC. (headquarters and plant located in Winchester, Kentucky, U.S.A.: hereinafter SSA), a consolidated subsidiary of SEKISUI CHEMICAL CO., LTD. (Teiji Koge, President & Representative Director) manufacturing and selling interlayer films for laminated glass, has announced it has recently installed an 814-kW photovoltaic power generation system at its headquarters and plant site at an investment of 150 million yen. The new photovoltaic power generation system is expected to generate 1,044 MWh/year of power for internal consumption at SSA. This amount is roughly equivalent to 10% of SSA’s annual power usage and is expected to reduce SSA’s GHG emissions by 579 t-CO2eq/year. To date, SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group has installed photovoltaic power generation systems with a total capacity of 8,222 kW at its group companies in Japan, but all of their output has been sold externally. Therefore, the photovoltaic power generation system installed at SSA becomes the first system within the group whose output is intended for internal consumption.

In the SEKISUI Environmental Sustainability Plan: Accelerate (FY2017-2019), an Environmental Midterm Plan*1, SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group set a goal of reducing its GHG emissions by 6% from the 2013 actual fiscal level (of 942,000 t-CO2eq). To achieve this goal, the Group allocated 12 billion yen as an environmental contribution investment framework and has been promoting installing or updating systems that are effective in reducing GHG emissions. SSA’s new photovoltaic power generation system is supported by this framework. Efforts so far have resulted in the ability to reduce GHG emissions by 27,000 t-CO2eq/year in the Group as a whole. SEKISUI CHEMICAL Group has also set up a long-term GHG emissions reduction goal through FY2030, which received SBT Initiative Certification for Green House Gas Reduction Targets in June 2018 (first in the chemical sector)*2.
