As a continuation of the 1st Global Children's Eco Summit held in Tokyo on August 2nd, 2007, (
http://www.sekisuichemical.com/about/event/070928b.html) Sekisui Chemical Co., Ltd. announced a program of biannual Regional Children's Eco Summits in the U.S. and Europe, scheduled to begin this summer.
A key part of last year's Sekisui's 60th Anniversary program, based on the themes of 'Environment', 'Next Generation', and 'Global', the 2007 Global Children's Eco Summit was held on August 2nd at the United Nations University in Tokyo. 23 children of Sekisui Chemical Group employees from 9 countries made individual and group environmental presentations and debated environmental issues. Each participant made a personal environmental 'commitment' which was presented to Sekisui Chemical Co., Ltd. President Naotake Okubo in a headquarters ceremony on August 3rd.
A Global Children's Eco Summit will be held every 5 years: the next scheduled for 2012 in Japan. In order to build on the positive momentum generated by the 1st Global Children's Eco Summit, Regional Children's Eco Summits will be held every 2 years: The 1st round in 2008 and the 2nd round in 2010. The Regional Summits will be organized and conducted by volunteering Sekisui Chemical Group companies. Sekisui Chemical Group Companies in regions that do not hold Children's Eco Summits will be encouraged to undertake natural conservation activities.
According to Satoru ('Sandy') Oketani, General Manager of the Environmental Management Group of the CSR Department, "The 1st Global Children's Eco Summit was very successful and top management has a strong interest in continuing this program. The fact that Sekisui Chemical Group companies in the U.S. and Europe volunteered to conduct Regional Children's Eco Summits is a sign of the growing awareness of the importance of environmental management."
