Identifying Key IssuesThe Process of Identifying Key CSR Issues (Materialities)

Together with the start of the new medium-term management plan SHINKA!-Advance 2016 in fiscal 2014, we have reviewed issues related to CSR management efforts and identified key issues (materialities).

The Process of Identifying Key CSR Issues

We identified key CSR issues through the process below when formulating the CSR medium-term plan.

Step1 Screen for issues based on global guidelines

Step1 Screen for issues based on global guidelines

(1) Screen for possible issues based on ISO 26000 standards

We identified areas in need of attention based on a survey of the state of initiatives within the Group, from the standpoint of actions and expectations related to the seven core issues defined in ISO 26000.

(2) Analysis of CSR initiatives and information disclosure practices at other companies

We survey the CSR initiatives and information disclosure practices, such as CSR reports, at other leading CSR companies, identifying areas where Sekisui Chemical Group can improve upon in terms of CSR initiatives and information disclosure.

Step 2 SRI surveys and examination of issues at other companies

(2) Analysis of CSR initiatives and information disclosure practices at other companies

We survey the CSR initiatives and information disclosure practices, such as CSR reports, at other leading CSR companies, identifying areas where Sekisui Chemical Group can improve upon in terms of CSR initiatives and information disclosure.

Step 3 Analyze opinions and expectations of stakeholders

Step 3 Analyze opinions and expectations of stakeholders

(1) Compile key opinions from stakeholders

We solicit and organize the key opinions about CSR from our interactions with various stakeholders, including customers, shareholders, investors, employees, business partners and local communities.

(2) Analyze the main expectations of stakeholders

In light of the key opinions of stakeholders in (1) above, analyze the major expectations of stakeholders from the perspective of Sekisui Chemical Group's business activities and CSR initiatives.

Step 4 The Process of Identifying Key CSR Issues/ Formulate the CSR Medium-Term Plan

(1) Sort candidates for key CSR issues

Possible CSR issues that were identified in steps one through three above are added to strategic CSR issues that have been undertaken in the past, and organized as key CSR issues for future consideration.

(2) Assess the importance of candidates for key CSR issues

The candidates for key CSR issues sorted in Step 1 were subjected to overall evaluation along the two axes of their importance to stakeholders (A) and importance to Sekisui Chemical Group management (B). These key CSR issues were then ranked according to priority. Along axis A (importance to stakeholders), candidates were assessed from the perspectives of expectations of each stakeholder, world trends, and positive and negative impacts on the planet and society, while along axis B (importance to group management), they were assessed from the perspectives of consistency with management policies and management strategies, correspondence to CSR issues, risk and reputation, and priories based on a timeline.

(3) Formulate the CSR Medium-Term Plan

Following deliberation in the CSR Committee, key performance indicators (KPIs) were reviewed by the responsible departments for the identified key CSR issues, and then reflected in the drafting of the CSR Medium-Term Plan. The CSR Medium-Term Plan was then given final approval by the CSR Committee. By reflecting key CSR issues in the CSR Medium-Term Plan, management follows a proper PDCA cycle.
