Environment

The Sekisui Chemical Group and its employees endeavor to conserve the natural environment in various regions around the world through the development of personnel that work to conserve the environment.

Teaching the next generation about the environment in a “Children’s Nature Study Course”Observing living things in the forest (Hachimantai City, Iwate prefecture)

Hachimantai City is home to the Iwate plant of SEKISUI MEDICAL CO., LTD. The plant is surrounded by a diverse environment, including local rivers, and about 673 kinds of animals and plants, including 14 rare species, can be found on the plant grounds. In order to convey the richness of the area’s biodiversity to the next generation, the company held an Iwate Children’s Nature Study Course in July 2016, inviting local children to observe nature first hand.

Held near a spring-fed pond in a coppice located on-site, the course allowed children to consider the wonders of nature, including why there is a hole on the side of the bamboo leaf, and taught them to distinguish the Toxicodendron vernicifluum and poison oak trees, which should never be touched. The children also enjoyed discovering cast off cicada shells and snails in the trees, as well as dragon fly larvae and Gammaridea in the spring-fed pond.

The course taught the children the importance of preservation through an up-close experience with nature and we hope to continue such observational courses to further nurture children’s interest in the natural environment.
